Red Algae

Red algae (Phylum Rhodophyta) is a diverse group of plants, with both muticellular and unicellular varieties. It gets its colour by the presence of phycoerythrin, which is a photosynthesising molecule that helps absorb nutrients in areas of low red-spectrum light penetration (like deeper ocean). There are a variety of forms including the brittle and often-encrusting coralline algae.
