Cardinalfishes

Cardinalfishes of the family Apogonidae are small, mostly shallow water fish, that don't usually grow longer than about 10 cm. They have a habit of floating motionless just above the substrate, darting away if disturbed. Cardinalfish are "mouth brooders", meaning that once fertilised, the eggs are carried by the male in its mouth. During the incubation period, the male is unable to feed.
