This brittle star is commonly found under rocks in the subtidal zone. It has five arms with long spines, and is usually a reddish-brown to black colouration. It usually has no distinct patterning, unlike its close relative, the white-speckled Clarkcoma pulchra, however juveniles can sometimes be found with white-banded arms.
