This disc-shaped leatherjacket prefers deeper water, where it often congregates around jetty pylons or rocky outcrops. It is usually yellow-orange to brown in colouration, with a lattice of light stripes that form the mosaic pattern that gives this species its name. Hoever, as individuals get older, their pattern fades and they become more elongate. This species is most similar to E. gunnii, although that species is distiguishable by its more angular and irregular mosaic pattern.
