Distribution: SA gulf and coastal waters east of Port Lincoln

This species of urchin is found in algae and seagrass beds, where it often wraps itself in the algae. It has short blunt spines that are dark at the base and white at the tips, and the mostly white test is visible through the spines. As with most temnopleurid urchins, it has bands of primary spines, with tiny secondary spines in between these bands. The tube feet are white with yellow suction tips. It is very similar to a number of other species, such as A. ovum, which has black spines, and A. leucoglobus which has white-tipped tube feet. There is also an undescribed Amblypneustes, with dark tube feet and lighter spines.
