Haliotis cyclobates is a large abalone, although it does not generally reach legal size (H. rubra and H. laevigata are the only species in SA that do). It is very similar to H. rubra, but is generally smoother, is a more globular shape, and has a higher-protruding spire. It is found in similar rocky environments, but not usually in the large aggregations of H. rubra.
