This common species often forms large seagrass meadows, its wiry stems are branched, and feature relatively wide, squarish leaves. It is similar to its close relative, A. griffithii, but has twisted leaves, and two sharp teeth at the end of each leaf, where A. griffithii has two rounded tips.
