Habitat: Rocky areas on rocks. Occasionally epiphytic on macroalgae
Depth: Lower intertidal to 10+ metres
This unique brown algae more closely resembles a sponge than an algae at first glance. Its thallus forms a net-like mesh, which is perforated by mostly circular holes of various sizes. This mesh forms irregular lobes, but unlike sponges, these lobes are hollow. This algae is found all over the world and its unusual appearance means that it is unlikely to be mistaken for any other SA species.
