This large ischnochiton ranges from cream to dark brown, but is usually a sandy brown colour. Its girdle is usually a similar colour, and has a ring of pale scales close to the valves. Its primary distinguishing features are the heavy longitudinal ribbing on the lateral areas of the valves, with lighter longitudinal ribbing in the pleural area.
