A five-armed brittle star, O. ramsayi has a round granulated disc, except for the radial shields, small ovals around the outside of the disc, bordering each arm. This helps to distinguish it from other similar species, where the radial shields are not usually visible. This species has banded arms, with short spines, and its overall colour is variable, from dark brown, light brown and yellowish, to red.
