This large seabird is common on rocky coastlines where it can be found in large groups, often alongside the similar Little Pied Cormorant (Microcarbo melanoleucos). P. crocorax can be distinguished by its larger size and longer beak, and the yellow patch over its eye. It is also similar to the Black-faced Cormorant (P. fuscescens), which has a darker beak, and is missing the yellow patch, where instead the black colouration extends over its eye.
