This large bivalve has an elongated fan shape, pointed at one end to help it burrow into the sediment, leaving only its top edge visible. It has a relatively thin shell, with a sharp edge. This feature is what give it its common name, as it can be abundant in the sandy shallows where it is a painful reminder for waders to watch their step.
