Like others in its genus, R. torriana is keeled, rather than flattened. It is greenish in colour overall, with brown stripes, thick on the lateral areas of the median valves and thinner on the pleural areas, with occasional dark blotches over sections of the organism. It has a wide girdle with large pearly scales. this species is commonly located under rocks in the subtidal zone. It can be distinguished from the similar R. diaphora and R. jugosa, which both have orange and teal stripes in the pleural area, as well as Rhyssoplax calliozona, which is a deeper green and has radial stripes on the terminal valves, instead of semicircular orbital stripes.
