This medium-sized spider crab is usually found under rocks, but can occasionally be seen in the open on rocky reef. It is usually encrusted with a variety of sponges and colonial ascidians, sometimes to the point that the carapace is barely visible. When its features can be made out, it can be distinguished from other spider crabs by its bright red carapace and large nodules on the claws.
