This small fish is common on rocky reefs where it spends its time in moderately large groups around and under ledges. It is commonly pinkish/grey in colour, with black dorsal and anal fins, and a yellow tail with a blue margin. The shape of its tail is especially distinctive, with a 3-pointed shape where the centre point is longer than the other two.
