This five-armed sea star is usually pale to bright orange in colour and is recognisable by the scattered tubercles and blunt spines on its body. It can be distinguished from Uniophora nuda by the arrangement of these tubercles, which do not form a linear ridge along the arms, unlike in U. nuda.
