Asparagopsis taxiformis

This distinctive species of algae is distributed globally, and there are both introduced and native (or cryptogenic) varieties present in SA. It is bushy, and like its scientific name suggests, it has thick thalli that resemble asparagus spears. Its overall colouration is pinkish red to almost white, and can sometimes form quite extensive meadows.
