Meridiastra oriens

This 6-armed cushion star is commonly found under rocks, and is one of two six-armed Meridiastra species that feature a large dark central spot. It is almost identical to M. occidens, and can only be reliably differentiated by experts. This species usually has a lighter central spot to M. occidens - dark brown instead of black, and has a slightly smoother appearance, owing to the shorter dorsal spines.
